Curious about chickens? Think you would like to keep them in your backyard but not ready to take the plunge? This is an introductory course for those wanting to keep chickens on a small scale but aren’t sure where to start.
Course Objectives:
Running from 1pm until 3pm this course will give you the confidence to get you started. We will be looking at:
- The difference between meat and egg chickens
- Types of chickens – hybrids & purebreds, bantams & large breeds
- Rare Breeds
- Buying healthy birds
- How to hold a chicken
- Healthy housing
- Feeding
- Seasonal care and requirements
- Common pests and problems
- How to deal with predators
- Vets
- Eggs and egg issues
- Sourcing your chicken supplies
- Basic biosecurity
- Question and Answer session
We will be going on an extended tour of the property and talking about the role that chickens play at All Sorts Acre. Tim and Jennifer will give you an overview of their day with their birds as well as the experiences they have had.
